FACULTY FEATURE
STUART CAMPBELL, Upper School Mandarin and Spanish

Upper School foreign language teacher Stuart Campbell hopes his students develop a love for the Mandarin language, which he calls “intoxicating” and a window into the realities of Mandarin-speaking people. He is teaching the inaugural course of Mandarin and Chinese Culture to a small group of enthusiastic students, as well as three sections of Spanish, which he considers another critical language with a fascinating culture.

Mr. Campbell was born in Potomac, Maryland. His mother is Chinese and his father American. He spent the last four years teaching in China with English Language Institute/China, during which he traveled extensively throughout the country. He was able to visit his grandfather’s house in Shanghai and his favorite place, Jiuzhaigou, which is a nature preserve highlighted by many lakes and waterfalls.

Mr. Campbell earned his bachelor of arts in international relations and music from Stanford University, focusing in comparative cultures and in percussion performance: the marimba and vibraphone are his musical loves. During his Stanford years, he was a participant in Intervarsity Christian Fellowship, and he currently enjoys the community of McLean Bible Church. In addition to China, he has traveled to New Zealand, Australia, India, Thailand, and Bali. He enjoys soccer, skiing, tennis, and classical and jazz music.
